You knew it: the current sense of the word "belts" is taken away enough from its sense of origin: it indicated a long simple bag which we put around around loins. Decorated as a jewel, notably in the Merovingian period, the belt was reduced at the beginning of the XIVth century to a simple strip of material or to a cord tied up on hips. In the XVIth century, we suspended it small objects.
